What is a Low Watt Energy Efficient Space Heater?

A low wattage space heater in my opinion is a space heater that is 1000-watts or less. These space heaters can a great way to heat a small room, a garage, desk, or small bathroom.

Low watt space heaters can typically just be plugged into a regular 120-volt outlet without any concerns.

Many of the newer space heaters have built-in safety features so that they turn off if the heater falls down or if it overheats. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends buying space heaters that use tip-over safety switches.

How Much Energy Does A Low Wattage Space Heater Use?

About 50% of the energy for homes in the USA goes towards heating and cooling --- that is a significant amount of money. The typical power of a low power space heater is in the 400-watt to 1000-watt range (more powerful space heaters run in the 1500-watt plus territory).  This watt range is usually suitable to heat a room between 60 to 120 square feet.

Many low amp space heaters tout their new energy efficient features, these new space heaters tend to be better designed than their older cousins --- heating more space for less energy.

How Much Does It Cost To Run An Energy Efficient Space Heater?

Electricity cost is determined by the kilowatt hour or kWh. So if a space heater runs 24 hours in a day, and it is rated at 1000-watts, then it will use 1.0 kWh per hour, or 24kWh per day.

The average price per kWh in the USA is about 11 cents. So if the space heater is run 24-hours, then the daily cost will be about $2.64. If it runs for a whole month, then the cost would be $79.20 --- and this cost is on top of your regular electric bill.

So to summarize, these low watt space heaters are more energy efficient, and can be a fantastic way to heat a small room --- but if you run them all day long, they can still become quite expensive.

To save energy with your heating and cooling, it's also important to install a programmable thermostat --- here's my review on the best programmable thermostats under $50.

How To Prevent A Low Wattage Space Heater From Blowing A Fuse?

If you are using a space heater, and the circuit breaker trips, this is actually good news --- the breaker is working to prevent overloading (and possibly a fire).

Circuit breakers (at the panel box) are rated in amps, with 15 and 20 amps being the most common --- but can go up to 40+.

If the space heater is plugged into a bedroom outlet, and it is on a 20amp circuit (connected to other wall outlets in a "circuit") and if the total amps exceeds 20amps, then the breaker will trip.

If there are any nearby appliances such as a TV, you can try unplugging the appliance, and turning the space heater back on. You can do this systematically. Just make sure to actually unplug the appliance because even plugged in it still draws electricity. Regardless of the circuit rating, it is advisable to avoid plugging more than one space heater into a single circuit as well.

If you don't like this solution, you can install a dedicated new circuit breaker just for the energy efficient space heater.

Fire Safety

In addition to using a space heater and a properly rated circuit, it's also important to follow the three foot rule. The 3 foot rule recommends keeping anything that can light on fire at least three feet away from the space heater. Many fires each year are started by heaters.

It would also be a smart idea to make sure that there is a smoke alarm in any room with a space heater. Any modern building codes require a smoke detector in each bedroom.

Where To Buy The Best Lowest Wattage Space Heater?

The best place to be a low amp space heater is Amazon. With the Amazon marketplace, you can choose between a wide variety of products with many customer reviews.

You can take your time and read all of the features as well as read some positive (and negative) reviews.

Amazon usually has great shipping options, though this may vary depending on if you have Amazon Prime or whether it's a third party seller. Shipping may also be impacted if the product is in stock or not.

And there is no fan so this small space heater is super quiet --- it also doesn't dry out the air.

  • Only 400-watts for energy efficient heating

  • Sleek wall mount design
  • Very quiet
  • Complaints of odor
  • More work to install on wall

This 1000-watt space heater plugs into a normal 110-volt outlet and uses infrared to heat up your room.

Infrared will heat up the environment rather than the air so is very efficient.

Heat Storm also sells free standing models and other variations of this heater.

  • Uses infrared to heat room (no smell)
  • Uses normal 110-volt outlet
  • Only 1000 watts so shouldn't trip breaker
  • Noisy

The space heater by Home_Choice is a terrific heater than on low heat is only 750-watts (option to increase to 1500-watt high heat).

The Home_Choice heater uses ceramic heating elements for energy efficiency and a strong heat output.

It comes with safety features such as turning off automatically if it overheats. It will also shutoff if tipped over in either direction.

Plug in this heater into a regular outlet.

The Kloudic QN04 space heater is a smart choice for heating a small area.

At 600-watts, the heater is energy efficient with ceramic heating elements, but still puts out a good amount of heat (will product hot air in two seconds).

This space heater is stylish with a power button at top, and also comes with a handle.

Another great feature is an oscillation setting so that it will send heat all over the room and it can also work as a regular fan.

  • 600-watt heater with ceramic heating element for good heat output
  • Comes with handle to easily move
  • Oscillation feature so it spreads heat evenly
  • May stop working in beginning months of use
  • Small heat output
  • Poor durability

The Auzkin portable space heater uses 650-watts when in fast heating mode, and regular heat uses 950-watts.

This space heater has a 45 degree oscillation feature to spread warm air evenly, and it can also be used as a fan (without heat).

This lightweight portable unit can easily be moved with its handle, and it has built-in safety features.

  • Only 650-watt fast heat mode setting
  • Can be used as fan
  • 45 degree oscillation mode
